This 6-week advance course is suited for people who have completed one of the Semi-cursive (Gyosho) or Cursive (Sousho) courses at Kisyuu Calligraphy or people who have experience in calligraphy. We will learn basics of Kana 仮名 writing which is a historical Japanese writing style created by women around the 9th century, Heian period. Explore this beautiful writing style which is only used in Japan through historical poems and tales!

Here is the potential topics of the course:

  • History of Kana and how it’s developed in the Heian period

  • Write Iroha song いろはうた (A famous Japanese song all written in Hiragana)

  • Practice basic six rules of Renmen 連綿 (How to connect characters with a thin line

  • Kotsugaki (Brush control exercise through Sumi-e drawing)

  • Compare Kana style written by men and women

  • Write a kana song on a Tanzaku or Shikishi board
