Kakizome (書き初め), meaning “first writing,” is a cherished Japanese New Year tradition in which participants create their first calligraphy of the year. Kakizome symbolizes setting positive intentions, hopes, and resolutions for the year ahead.

Traditionally, Kakizome involves writing auspicious words or phrases with brush, ink, and paper—an expressive and mindful practice that invites reflection and creativity. It is a meaningful way to begin the year with focus, gratitude, and artistic energy.

In this workshop, we will explore the foundations of Japanese calligraphy and create your own New Year’s resolution on a long sheet of rice paper. Please send Kisyuu a word or phrase that you would like to write at least 2 days prior to the workshop.

Workshop topics include:

  • Introduction to Japanese calligraphy history and tools

  • How to hold and control the brush

  • Basic brush techniques

  • Exploring the expressive possibilities of sumi ink

  • Understanding and writing kanji characters

  • Creating your New Year’s resolution calligraphy on large format paper

This workshop is open to everyone - no calligraphy experience or Japanese language knowledge is needed.
All supplies are provided as rentals, so you don’t need to bring anything.
