In this 4-week special course, you will explore both traditional Japanese calligraphy and Bokusho (墨象), abstract calligraphic art created with sumi ink.

You will learn how to write Japanese and Chinese characters in a variety of styles, while also discovering how to express ideas, emotions, and movement through lines, shapes, and ink without relying on characters.

Bokusho is a form of calligraphy that uses sumi ink, brushwork, lines, and shapes to tell stories and convey feelings through abstract expression. Each week, you will be given a theme and invited to explore it through both calligraphy and Bokusho, allowing you to experience the expressive possibilities of brush and ink in different ways.

Course contents include:

• Learn how to write Japanese and Chinese characters in multiple styles, including block, semi-cursive, cursive, and free-style

• Explore how to express ideas and emotions through lines and shapes rather than characters, and create Bokusho (墨象) art

• Discover how to use dots, lines, ink bleeds, splashes, and other sumi ink techniques to create expressive artwork

• Experiment with different brushes and tools to create a variety of lines, textures, and effects

• Explore how to express emotions, movement, and energy through brush and ink

• Create your own unique calligraphic and abstract artworks inspired by a different theme each week

*It is recommended to complete one of the courses at Kisyuu Calligraphy prior to taking this course or have knowledge of basic calligraphy writings. But please email Kisyuu if you haven’t taken any courses but are interested in this course.
