Special Calligraphy Workshop at Yama Cafe (Sunday, July 7)


WHEN: Sunday July 7th TIME: 5:00pm - 8:00pm (Calligraphy, then Dinner)

WHERE: Yama Cafe (2007 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V5L 1T9 )

Join us for the unique collaboration of Japanese food & art on the day of Start Festival, TANABATA.

At this special workshop, you will enjoy Japanese summer tradition “Nagashi-Somen” (noodle in flowing water) after experience the combination of traditional and modern Japanese calligraphy.

On the day of Tanabata, it is a tradition to write your wish on a piece of paper and hang it on a bamboo. So at the end of workshop, you will be asked to write your wish or favorite word on a piece of paper called Tanzaku.

During this 2-hour beginner workshop, we will go over the basics of Japanese calligraphy, including:

  • Proper way of holding and controlling the brush

  • Basic brush techniques

  • Ways to express yourself with the brush and ink

  • How to write kanji characters

  • Tanabata wish writing

Everybody is welcome – no calligraphy experience or Japanese language skills are necessary. All supplies are included as rental, so no need to bring anything. Just bring yourself and curiosity!

Calligraphy brush Fude(筆)
Bottled Sumi ink (墨)
Ink well Suzuri(硯)
Felt fabric (下敷き)
Paperweight Bun-chin(文鎮)

Class fee is non-refundable and non-transferable to a different date.

This class will only take place if the minimum attendance number of 3 registrants are met.
